Armored Core...The Board Game?!

In yet another suprising revalation, a board game company has announced an adaptation of a video game. This time, the giant mech game Armored Core gets the board game treatment. What is interesting is that the board game developer decided to take a game that is known for its third person action/shooter series and turn it into a real time strategy board game.   As we discuss in this month's podcast about Age of Mythology: The Board Game, the challenges faced by board game developers to recapture the feel of a Real Time Strategy video game. What intrigues me about this game is that the developers claim everyone LITERALLY plays the game in real time, and that each game takes about 20 minutes. Further, one's ability to multi-task and move quickly in the game is rewarded because you can move faster, fight quicker, and upgrade your mech to get an edge on the competition. Doom Board Game 2016? Second Verse Same as the First?

At the end of July, Fantasy Flight Games announced that they would be revisiting an old license and gave the world the first peek at components from DOOM. This is not the first time Fantasy Flight Games has released a Doom game as they released a game based on the video game franchise back in 2004. The game was successful enough to garner an expansion, creatively titled Doom The Board Game - Expansion Set. (Such Wow. Much Creativity.) It is interesting to see the parallels between the development and release of Doom (2004) and Doom (2016). Doom (2004) was released concurrent with the release of Doom 3 in 2004 and the components and look of the demons in the board game were based of the style and design of the video game. Now, in 2016, we have a new Doom game and, in turn, a new Doom board game, both of which are reboots of the 2004 Doom. "Grandpa, tell me about the console wars." "Ah, yes sonny, that was many years ago, when ghosts were in hi-c and pepsi was clear..." "Tell me sonny...what year is it?" "2016." For those of us who grew up in the early 1990s, this was our war. Yes, we had the post-apocalyptic world of Crossfire to look forward to and our attention would later turn to digipets and arguing over which Pokemon version was best, Red, Blue, or Yellow. (Wait...are we sure it isn't the 1990s?) But, until those days arrived, we had the ultimate console war. Sega Genesis vs. Nintendo. You were in one camp or another. You discussed and debated the virtues of zelda, toejam and earl, vectorman, donkey kong, golden axe, and more as you used games, gameplay, graphics, sound, and speed to make your case.
